Scots picked to finish third in USA South
The Maryville College football team, coming off a 7-3 campaign a year ago, was picked to finish third in the USA Athletic Conference in a preseason coaches poll at the league’s media day on Tuesday. Christopher Newport was tabbed to claim the conference crown, with Ferrum College predicted to finish second. Defending conference champion North Carolina Wesleyan was slotted behind the Scots in the fourth spot.
The Scot several players who received postseason accolades last year, led by junior linebacker and All-South selection Kyle Chewning. Maryville had 12 players named to the 2007 All-USA South, most notably Chewning and junior running back Rommel Hightower. The Scots open the season Sept. 6 at Huntingdon College. The Maryville home opener is scheduled for Sept. 13, when the Scots host long-time rival Centre College at Honaker Field.
