Maryville Christian School fifth-grader Tara Shields helped Tennessee Team Pride of Murfreesboro capture the 9-under AAU national championship last month in Kenner, La.

Tennessee defeated the Arkansas Mavericks in a thriller in the championship game, 32-29. The national crown capped a whirlwind year for the talented who Shields, who led Maryville Christian to the first girls title at any level this winter when the Lady Eagles won the Blount County Elementary Basketball Tournament.

The title came two years after Maryville Christian had gone winless for the season. A gifted point guard who can score off the drive or drain the 3, Shields was named the elementary tournament’s most valuable player. Shields averaged 18 points per game for the Lady Eagles, who finished the season 14-0.
