A Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee has received notice that Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed Tuesday, April 8 Safe Haven Awareness Day in Tennessee.
The proclamation was requested by A Secret Safe Place to raise awareness of Tennessee’s Safe Haven Law, which allows the anonymous surrender of unharmed newborns up to 3-days-old to hospitals, birthing centers, community health clinics, and walk-in clinics without fear of prosecution for the mother.
“We are very fortunate to have both Governor Bredesen and the state of Tennessee support our efforts to prevent newborn abandonment,” said Shannon McCloud, executive director of A Secret Safe Place for Newborns.
“We would like to say thank you to the many individuals and agencies in Tennessee who have helped us educate young women about this important law. At least 21 babies have been saved across the state during the past four years. For those who don’t know what the law is or would like more specific information on how to help with our mission to protect unwanted newborns, please visit our organization’s Web site at www.secretsafeplacetn.org or call our business office at 865-254-2208,” McCloud said.
Women in crisis should call the helpline at 1-866-699-SAFE.
