You’ve got to hand it to the Southerners.
When it comes to pregame festivities, Tennessee’s Vols don’t have anything on the 2007 National League Pee Wee Super Bowl champions.
Prior to the game Saturday at Heritage High School, fans of the Southerners set forth a tailgate feast fit for a king. Complete with hot foot, dips and plenty of drinks, the only thing missing was a Southerners Navy sailing up to the stadium along the Little River prior to kickoff.
The game itself would prove a defensive struggle.
There were plenty of big hits all ‘round. Eagleton got standout games from Caleb Cooper, Chase Neibarger, Matthew McClurg and Tyler Ott. Maryville would get big plays from Christopher Stephens and Josh Yoakum offensively to keep the pressure on.
In the second quarter, the Southerners broke through for what would prove the game’s only score.
Clay Strawn became the game’s hero before halftime when he put Maryville on top. The Southerners would come up short on the conversion, but it mattered little. Strawn’s 4-yard touchdown run was all either defense would yield, sending Maryville home with the 2007 championship — with plenty of eats left over to celebrate.
