The students of Alcoa Middle School recently got a cake break, and teachers didn’t mind at all. Neither did the doctors.
East Tennessee Medical Group sponsors a cake party each year for the students at Alcoa Middle School. It is one of many activities and ways the group helps the students at the school as part of their Adopt-a-School sponsorship.
“They’re great,” sixth grade Social Studies teacher Robin Spears said. “They’re good to us.”
Spears, who also is coordinator of the AMS adopt-a-school program, said ETMG provides school supplies every year. “They provide us with folders, pencils, paper and backpacks.” The cake party, too, is an annual ritual that the students look forward to.
The medical group also provides Christmas gifts for some of the students and additional supplies in the classroom.
“Any supplies a teacher may need, they fulfill it in some way. They provide first-aid kits for coaches, and they come and do sports physicals for us.”
Spears said she appreciates the Adopt-a-School program through the Blount County Chamber of Commerce that made the relationship between the medical group and the school possible. The group invests a lot of money and time in the school.
“The money is nice, but it is nice to know there are businesses that want to get involved. It’s really good for everybody,” she said.
Any business interested in the program can contact the Chamber of Commerce at 865-983-2241. Spears said. “Some schools don’t have a sponsor,” she said.
