Medic Regional Blood Center reports a need for type O Negative blood, the universal blood type. “This blood type is important because it is most often used in emergency situations when blood type is not known,” said Christi Fightmaster, Medic spokesperson. All eligible donors are encouraged to give blood, especially if you know you are O Negative.
Medic has two donations sites: 1601 Ailor Avenue in downtown Knoxville and 11000 Kingston Pike in Farragut. Call 865-524-3074 for hours of operation. Community blood drives are also planned.

All donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more and have positive identification. All donors will receive a free T-shirt and a cholesterol evaluation with no fasting required. Each donor will also receive a year’s membership towards Medic’s Family Blood Coverage Program. This program exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood collection and processing fees at any U.S. hospital if a transfusion is needed.
