A truck crashed into a tree on the road leading to Ruby Tuesday Lodge on the campus of Maryville College Monday night, claiming the life of a Maryville College assistant football coach and sending two others to the hospital.
Killed in the wreck was Shawn Cody Bowers, assistant football coach for Maryville College. In critical condition was Trey Lefler. The wreck was reported at 10:58 p.m. on the road leading past Cooper Athletic Center and between the main entrance and service entrances to Ruby Tuesday Lodge. At least 15 Maryville Police Department cruisers responded to the scene in addition to three fire department trucks.
Also transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center was Matt Lambert, a 2007 graduate of Maryville College. Injury status on Lambert has not yet been released.
Bowers, a 2005 graduate of Maryville College, was a graduate of Loudon High School where he was a three-sport standout who lettered in baseball, basketball and football. At Maryville College, he was a three-year starter and letterman, playing defensive back and special teams. This was his second year on the Maryville College football staff, where he worked with the secondary.
Maryville College head football coach Tony Ierruli, athletic director Randy Lambert and Dean of Students Vandy Kemp were called to the scene and were meeting with about 50 students who gathered on a hill overlooking the road leading to the accident scene.
