Relay for Life kicks off with community party at Airport Hilton

The 2008 Relay for Life campaign kicked off recently with a community party at the Airport Hilton.

The 2008 Blount County Relay for Life co-chairs Rick and Cindy Shepard announced the goal of $375,000 for this year’s event. The 2007 co-chairs, Mark and Cathy Cate, were honored for their efforts last year. “They were the Relay for Life volunteers for the year for Tennessee and the Midsouth Region,” Rick Shepard said. “They beat every Relay volunteer, not only for the whole state of Tennessee but for the six state region.”

Shepard said the event was well attended and everyone had a fun time. “The party went well, we had 96 people,” he said. “Most are volunteers and committee people who are committed to the Relay for this year.”

The theme for this year is celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to cancer and help raise funds to fight back against the disease. “We’ll celebrate the relay kick off, we’ll have a remembrance theme and we’ll have a fight back theme,” he said. “We will kick it off June 6 at Maryville College with an all star lineup of entertainment.”

Relay for Life is an annual overnight community event where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, have fun and take turns walking around an illuminated track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer.
