Getting “adopters” and “adoptees” together to exchange ideas for the Adopt-a-School program is always part of the annual reception to celebrate the partnerships. The Blount County Chamber of Commerce administers the Adopt-a-School program in the county, pairing off area businesses with schools to foster understanding and fill needs in the school systems.
A reception on Oct. 30 got “adoptees” and “adopters” together to meet, plan and compare notes with other schools and businesses on what makes a successful and fun partnership.
Among ideas discussed help with coordinating book fairs, sponsoring disadvantaged students in area programs, rewarding students who have perfect attendance, assisting with field day and providing items for the schools such as gift cards, food, equipment and supplies. The schools shared ideas on how they helped their “adopters,” including decorating Christmas trees, giving gifts of treats for the offices, invitation to school events and providing music and choirs for business events.
Plaques were presented to businesses who participated in 2006-2007 school year and the need for more business partners was discussed. Anyone interested in participating can contact Brenda Farner at the Blount County Chamber, 865-273-1202.
