Not many folks make it to 95 years of age.
Helen Webb has and now she’s looking forward to 96.
The longtime Blount County Republican Party volunteer and organizer of the annual Lincoln Day dinner celebrated her birthday at lunch with friends at Aubrey’s Restaurant Nov. 10. She was surprised by the gesture. “I thought, the Republican Party has gone crazy to pull a big one like this,” she said. “I was certainly surprised.”
Several of her friends were on hand for the occasion. “Helen is such a wonderful lady. The Republican Party is where it is because of Ms. Webb,” Assistant County Mayor and Blount County Republican Party Chairman Dave Bennett said. “She has such a servant’s heart and I hope she’s around as long as I am.”
Webb’s friend Johanna Ackerman invited Webb to lunch and brought along her friend James Taylor of Blount County as a guest. “I usually take her to lunch several times a year,” Ackerman said.
Ackerman said she got the idea for the party when she was at the Republican Women’s Fashion Show and Webb mentioned her birthday was coming up. Ackerman hatched the plan to invite a handful of friends to lunch with Webb.
State Rep. Doug Overbey said Webb’s commitment to the community had made Blount County a better place. “Helen is a giver to so many of us who have sought office,” he said. “Helen Webb is a shining example of being involved in the community.”
