Veterans, their families and supporters gathered at the Blount County Courthouse on Saturday, Nov. 10, to honor those servicemen and women who have sacrificed for the country.
The ceremony was preceded by a reception at the courthouse.
Blount County Mayor Jerry Cunningham, a veteran and former U.S. Marine, praised Charles Staley, Donna Hatcher and Heather Everett for their work in organizing the event. “They work so hard,” he said of their efforts.
Cunningham said the thoughts shared by Col. Tom Shaughnessy of William Blount High School JROTC were fitting. The mayor said some in society don’t appreciate what veterans mean to the community and the country.
“They’re revered by a big sector, but there is a sector of the citizenry that looks down on people who have served,” said the mayor, “and that has troubled me since I came home from Vietnam. It’s a very special day to make sure we don’t forget the sacrifices.”
