The Maryville sophomore tipped a missed free-throw back to Aaron Douglas. Douglas returned the ball to Reynolds, who put the Rebels ahead to stay with 50 seconds remaining in a 73-68 overtime victory in the quarterfinal at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
The win, the first for Maryville in state tournament play, sends the Rebel's to Friday's Class AAA semi-finals, where they will meet the winner of the Craigmont/White's Creek contest, who will play later tonight.
"One of their 'bigs' had just fouled out (before overtime)," Maryville coach Mark Eldridge said. "We thought right there we had a chance to kick it inside to Douglas or Jay."
Reynolds was almost speechless after his heroics.
"I got nervous and excited," Reynolds said. "I was nervous. I just didn't want to disappoint Coach."
Maryville got a big game from all of its stars. Senior Kent Basile led the Rebels with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Senior Tyler Maples added 16 points and 9 assists. Jordan Damron had 12 points, Douglas 10.
The semi-final is tomorrow at 8 p.m. EDT.
