Poets take stage for Chilhowee Club contest

The GFWC Chilhowee Club held its annual poetry contest recently, and the winners were invited to come to a reception and read their poems. Students in the Maryville, Alcoa and Blount County school systems competed. The contest was divided into four categories. Division I was for students in grades 1 to 3. Division II was for students in grades 4 to 6. Division III was for students in grades 7 and 8, and Division IV for was students in grades 9 through 12.

Dr. Margie Carico introduced each winner. The poetry contest is one of the ways that the Chilhowee Club supports arts in the community. Winners will be sent to the district contest for judging, and district winners are judged on the state level.

Division I
First Place: "Roller Coasters," by Jared Douglas from Fort Craig Elementary
Second place: "The Haunted Gym," by Madison Wilkerson from Porter Elementary
Third place: "All about My Brother," by Shawn Bretz from Porter Elementary
Honorable mention: "Christmas Poem," by Kaitlyn Messer from Fairview Elementary.

Division II
First place: "It’s a Blue Christmas," by Daniel Peffley from William Blount Middle
Second place: "My Dog Bufford," by Michaela Hearon from Townsend Elementary
Third place: "My Special Friend," by Quincy Webb from Fort Craig Elementary.

Division III
First place: "The True Meaning of Poetry," by Tiffany Anderson from Maryville Middle
Second place: "The Question," by Ryan Stennes from Carpenters Middle
Third place: "Nature’s Basin," by Pauline Hanset from Alcoa Middle
Honorable mention: "Home," by Lora Brooke Raper from Carpenters Middle.

Division IV
First place: "Life’s River," by Jamie Fowler from Alcoa High School
Second place: "On Center Stage," by Haley Katherine Stinnett from William Blount High
Third place: "A Procrastinator’s Monologue," by Laura Tenpenny from William Blount High
Honorable mention: "Autumn," by Elise Jones from William Blount High.
