Karen Rogers of Knoxville was playing in the Gate - Gateway to Independence Golf Tournament on Friday, June 22, at Royal Oaks Golf and Country Club. She used a blue tee and drove the ball 174 yards on the No. 5 hole, scoring a hole-in-one.
Julie Small, vice president of the board of directors for The Gate, said the tournament raised about $9,000. After expenses approximately $7,500 was generated for the organization. This was their first fund-raising golf tournament.
The Gate is a non-profit organization located on Sycamore Drive just off East Lamar Alexander Parkway in Maryville. The organization has been in existence for about four years and serves young adults in Blount County who are out of high school and have disabilities.
"It gives them a place to go and have social opportunities," Small said. "We keep them active and give them opportunities to cook and do some vocational training."
Small said there are 23 participants from throughout Blount County. "The difference with us is this is for young adults after high schools," she said. "Its not young kids with special needs, its specifically for young adults."
