American Girl books and dolls, having been around for more than 20 years, can boast fans from ages 6 to 26. The books offer historical glimpse of life in different eras of American life, as lived through young girls of the day.

Addy Walker’s story is set in 1864, as the young black girl works on a plantation as a slave with her parents, who are planning their escape to the North.

Connie Porter is the author of the Addy series of American Girl books. She recently brought her stories to Fort Craig Elementary School to read, sign books and participate in a cookies and lemonade tea party.

The author, who was delayed temporarily, sat in a rocking chair in the library of the school and read her work to the 60-plus visitors, most of them with American Girl books and dolls in hand.
