Megan Underwood gives a gift on her birthday

Before the regular meeting of the Maryville Kiwanis Club in October, a special guest arrived with a special gift. Megan Underwood, along with her mother Jessica Underwood, had plans for Megan’s 4th birthday party. Instead of gifts for herself, Megan asked those attending her party to bring monetary donations for the Imagination Library. Megan presented the Kiwanis Club with a decorated box, wrapped like a choo-choo train with a smoke stack. Inside the box was a gift of $86.

The money will provide six children with a book a month for a year.

Megan is a recipient of Dolly Parton Imagination Library books each month, and she wanted others to be able to receive the books too because she enjoys them so much.

Although the Dollywood Foundation absorbs a lot of the administrative expense of this program, local sponsors such as the Maryville Kiwanis Foundation in Blount County have to raise the money for the books and postage themselves. It costs about $29 per year per child, half of which is provided for Tennessee children through the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. The other half is raised locally.
