What was your first paying job?
"At 8 years old, I inherited my brothers job grocery shopping - 25 cents a trip to A&R grocery for Mrs. Thornton and cutting her grass weekly ($1.25) throughout the growing season."
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you take??
"A well charged satellite phone," Beard says.
If you could do one impulsive thing, unrestricted by cost, what would it be??
"Eliminate all third world debt."

"Ill have what shes having" from "When Harry met Sally".
What are you guilty of??
"Being cranky, short with colleagues, especially when patients are waiting on me," Beard says.
What is one thing you have always wanted to do but havent?
"Travel around the world utilizing every known mode of transportation."

Getting Oriented, by Paul Alan Laughlin, Beard says.
Do you think there is life on other planets?
"Probably, especially in other solar systems," Beard says.
What is your favorite material possession?
"My wedding band," he says.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Beard says.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
"As a medical student performing one of my first physical examinations, I asked a lady to remove her gown so that I could "check your heart and listen to your breasts"
Why did you pursue the career you chose?
"Why would anyone want to spend their life learning, helping others and constantly being told how much you are needed and appreciated - all that, and never worrying that youll have employment?"
What is one word others often use to describe you and why?
"Driven, because Im either working or playing as hard and fast as I can, or Im asleep."
When you were 5 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
"Bigger than my 8-year-old brother, Bob. Later, I wanted to be a policeman, pilot, and from the time I was 12, a physician."
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
"My sweet tooth; I will not stop with just one cookie!"
What is your passion?
Beard says that after medicine and his family, his passions are outdoor activities such as tennis, hiking, running, bicycling, scuba and motorcycling.
What do you hate?
"Injustice and disease," Beard says.
With whom, living or dead, would you most like to have a long lunch?
"My mother died before I truly grew up. I would love to visit with her again.

What is your dream vacation?
Beard would enjoy back country camping and photographing in Alaska.

"Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin; Im looking forward to reading Buzz Thomass new book on What your preacher would like to tell you, but cant, because he needs the job."
Would you travel in space?
"Think about looking at Earth from space, of course."
If you could go back in time for a week, what time period or year would you visit?
"I would love to visit the McArthur family, my maternal grandparents, in Meridian, Mississippi during the Great Depression of 1929."
What character in a book or movie would you most like to be?
"I am happy with being me, but I really dont think there will be any books or movies about me."
What is the best advice your Mother gave you?
"Do the right thing - just because everybody is doing it doesnt make it right!"
