Head Start began in 1965 under the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as a program for preschoolers. It is an all-inclusive program providing health and dental services, speech therapy, social services support and referrals, transportation to most centers, parent involvement and training, developmental screenings, pre-readiness educational programs and transition, and a nutritional program which provides two-thirds of the daily nutritional needs of children.
Head Start is also interested in recruiting children with disabilities or other health impairments who require special education and/or related services.
The program is designed for preschoolers who meet certain eligibility requirements set by federal guidelines.
