Sports Briefs:

Golden named honorable preseason All-American
Bobby Golden, a senior post player from Louisville, has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American by Street & Smith’s annual basketball publication. Golden averaged 14.7 points per game as he helped lead the Scots to the NCAA Division III tournament for the eighth consecutive season last year.

Maryville’s 6-foot-7 man in the paint shot 52 percent from the field during and hauled in a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game. Golden and his teammates have posted a 66-21 record in three seasons and have dominated Great South Athletic Conference competition by going 25-3. The Scots have claimed three regular season Great South titles and two tournament crowns during Golden’s tenure.

Golden’s accolade is the third All-American selection during the 27-year tenure of Maryville head coach Randy Lambert. Sydney Ellis (Class of 2005) garnered two All-American selections as a Scot under Lambert.

Scots ranked seventh nationally by Street & Smith
The Maryville College men’s basketball team, looking to improve on a 21-8 record from a year ago, has been ranked No. 7 nationally by Street & Smith’s College Basketball in its preseason edition. Maryville has been to the NCAA Division III tournament on 13 occasions, including the last eight years. The Scots have won at least one game in the tournament in each of those eight seasons.

Maryville will return five potential starters for a season ago. The perimeter attack is led by Bo Mason. Mason, a 6-foot junior, averaged 13.3 points per game last season and earned All-Great South Athletic Conference second team accolades.

Bobby Golden, a 6-7 senior, earned first team All-Great South Athletic Conference honors after averaging 14.7 points per
game. He averaged 6.2 boards a contest. Assisting Golden in the paint will be Bradley Blair, who appeared in all 29 games and averaged 11.5 points. Junior Jeremy Holliday tossed in 6.5 points a game after shooting 50 percent from the field.

"Hopefully, our perimeter game will be as strong or will compliment our inside attack," Maryville coach Randy Lambert
said. "Our post players will be able to play with anybody in Division III. If some of our newcomers provide some production at the wing, we could have a great year."

Maryville opens Nov. 21 when it hosts Centre College at Cooper Athletic Center at 8 p.m.
