</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/sep/21/captains-gesture-sparks-lady-rebel-title-run/?partner=RSS</link><description>Caroline Jenkins lit up when the public address announcer at William Blount High School announced her name as the most valuable player of the 2011 Blount County volleyball tournament Monday night.
Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving player, her coach and Maryville teammates said.
The Lady Rebels entered the tournament having fallen in convincing fashion to rival Heritage only the week before. For a talented, senior-laden team, it was tough to take. For Jenkins, it was time to take action.

</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/sep/07/heritages-barnes-again-setting-tempo-area-runners/?partner=RSS</link><description>Heritage kicked off the 2011 cross country season in a fashionable manner at the Cherokee Classic 5K last Saturday.
On the Lady Mountaineers side, veteran anchors Lauren Barnes (21:14.40) and Joy Elfstrom (23:06.70) both performed admirably, finishing 17th and 48th, respectively.
“My race this weekend was good, but it wasn’t near what I have run on the course before,” Barnes, a senior, said. “However, I recently began speed training, so I plan on getting faster as the season goes on. Also, the team’s showing this weekend is a result of how hard everyone has worked in practice. We should definitely start seeing personal records by season’s end.”

The Scots are getting a player who can make things happen.

The Maryville High School baseball and softball teams both fell in openers of their respective state tournaments. The Lady Rebels, who fell, 6-1, to 2009 Class AAA state champion Riverdale, were looking to stave off elimination against Bolton as Blount Today went to press Wednesday afternoon.
The Rebels, back in the state tournament since Maryville won it all in 1989, were bested by Columbia, 8-1, on Tuesday. An elimination contest with Arlington awaited early Wednesday.

The Lady Rebels had runners at first and second with no one out. The William Blount lead was now down to a single run with Meredith Elmore at the plate in the bottom of the seventh in the district championship game. When Elmore promptly singled to left on a one-ball, two-strike count, the Lady Governors were in big trouble.
Cameron Campbell blew it all up with one brilliant throw.

Maryville tennis players Payton Robinette and Yusuke Yodono became the latest Blount County athletes to qualify for next week’s BlueCross Spring Fling state championships in Murfreesboro.
Robinette, a Lady Rebel freshman, prevailed, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, over William Blount’s Madison Costner in a hard-fought, Region 2 championship tilt on Tuesday at Cedar Bluff Racquet Club. The match was do-over from last week’s district title meeting, won by Costner, 7-6 (10-8), 6-0.

</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/may/18/maryvilles-petree-vaught-realize-childhood-dreams/?partner=RSS</link><description>Turns out Julia Petree and Torie Vaught have been planning this for a long, long time.
The two Maryville High School seniors and preschool running buddies both signed National Letters of Intent on Tuesday to continue with their respective sports at the next level.
Petree, a state champion sprinter, signed to further her track and field career at the University of Tennessee this fall. There, the Blount Today Female Athlete of the Year will reunite with former Maryville teammates Ellen Wortham and Ally Colvin. The trio, along with former Lady Rebel Ashley Bridenbaugh, was part of a state-record 4x400-meter relay Petree’s freshman season at Maryville.

The match, history, even, could turn on this next point, and Madison Costner wasn’t about to miss it.
The William Blount High School senior took a full swing on a serve from Maryville freshman Payton Robinette at the end of a first set tie-breaker Tuesday afternoon at the William Blount courts.

The Alcoa High School junior roped a pinch-hit double into the left field corner with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the sixth in a District 4AA winner’s bracket semifinal on Tuesday at Alcoa.
