</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/oct/05/scots-reach-midterm-exam-badly-need-win/?partner=RSS</link><description>The numbers are sobering.
Through four games, the Maryville College football team has yet to produce a 100-yard rusher. That’s 100 yards over the four games combined. Sophomore Chad Brooks leads with 85 yards on 38 carries.
Fifth-year redshirt senior Tim Conner has thrown twice as many interceptions (4) as touchdowns (2) this season. Punter R.J. Sandmeyer has a 400-yard cushion on the offense in terms of total yardage.

</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/oct/05/scots-volleyball-making-music-all-its-own/?partner=RSS</link><description>The dates for this weekend’s matches at Emory University in Atlanta finally hit home for Kandis Schram earlier this week, and the Maryville College women’s volleyball coach is having some issues with the schedule maker.
The Scots (13-5) will face some of the nation’s top Division III teams during the tournament, a critical midseason test for a Maryville team with NCAA tournament aspirations a month from now. However, the match with the host and third-ranked Eagles on Saturday will fall late enough in the day to cost Schram a chance to see country music legend Reba McEntire in concert at the Foothills Fall Festival in downtown Maryville.

Maryville College junior Brian Beckham is also one of nine Scots to tally at least a goal this season for one of the nation’s top-ranked Division III men’s teams.
Maryville (7-2-2) stormed out of the gate to a No. 15 national ranking before a pair of recent losses cooled thing a bit. The Scots currently rank seventh in the South Atlantic Region.

Later that evening, Schram checked her Facebook wall. On it was a message from former Scot Kathi Downs, a member of Schram’s first team at Maryville.

The odds of a Maryville College victory Thursday night in Cookeville are playing out along those lines as the Scots renew acquaintances with Tennessee Tech after a 63-year break.
The Golden Eagles are bigger. They’re faster. Division I-AA schools like Tech have 67 athletic scholarships to offer. Small schools like Maryville are prohibited from offering athletic scholarships of any kind by Division III bylaws.
Kickoff at Tech’s Tucker Stadium is 7 p.m. CST.

Head coach Kim Woodard then got a phone call from a talented junior college prospect with local ties who wanted to return home. Assistant coach Jessie Hackworth looked up her numbers.
When the pair visited Chattanooga State last May to watch Leah Kelley play in the junior college regional tournament, Hackworth said she turned to her boss and said: “Kim, we just got really lucky.”

The slick, sweet-shooting guard is leaving four years later an All-American.
Watson was notified over the weekend that D3hoops.com had named him to its second team, the high-scoring Scot making the list from a pool of 680 Division III players nationally. The Powder Springs, Ga., native finished as Maryville’s second all-time leading scorer, pouring in 1,943 points for an 18.1 points per game career average.

Myles Cordell’s laser beam to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Maryville College baseball team to a series-clinching 6-2 win over Covenant College last Friday night.
It was the 10th win this season for the Scots. The four-RBI, walk-off grand slam was the fourth home run for Maryville’s No. 4 this season.

Former Tennessee Lady Vol Sharrieffa Barksdale ran the 400-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 55.58 seconds at a meet in Eugene, Ore., in 1984. At the USA Track &amp;amp; Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last season, Wortham got within 1.25 seconds of that mark, her 56.83 scorcher now third-fastest all time for a Lady Vol in the event.
Barksdale ran in the Olympics. Twice.

In the 18 seasons since, Maryville has failed to record at least a 20-win season only three times, reaching the national tournament in each of the last 12 years.
Both of those marks are under assault as the Scots (5-6) ready to resume the season at a holiday tournament at Otterbein College beginning Dec. 28.
