</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/apr/07/other-coach-lambert/?partner=RSS</link><description>Four tournaments, four championships.
Randy Lambert has built an enduring legacy in 30-plus seasons as men’s basketball coach at Maryville College, but now wouldn’t be a good time to slow down.
There’s another coach Lambert out there, youngest son Wes, and early indications are he’s going to be pretty good.
“I’m not worried about him,” the elder Lambert said by phone from the Final Four in Houston this week.

The Tornadoes (23-7), Maryville Lady Rebels (19-13) and William Blount Lady Governors (21-12) each advanced to the regional semifinal round, each delivering thrilling quarterfinal wins to get within a game of sectionals.

The Blount County Blazers guard knocked down seven straight shots, including four 3-pointers, in an opening round game at the Special Olympics regional basketball tournament last Saturday at Maryville College’s Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Anderson’s outburst withstanding, the first-year Blazers weren’t able to stay with a team from Lenoir City, the defending state champions pulling away in the closing minutes for an easy win. Still, the showing from Anderson and the rest of the Blazers turned heads.

Alcoa’s boys’ basketball team secured Blount County’s lone district championship Tuesday night, knocking off Christian Academy of Knoxville, 51-49, in double overtime in the District 4AA title tilt at Scott High.
Junior Tre Tate put Alcoa (22-6) ahead to stay with a bucket with 30 seconds remaining. Senior Darrell Warren and sophomore Kenny Dean paced the Tornadoes with 11 points each, with tournament most valuable player Matt Shown adding eight. Tate, Dean and senior Steven Isom were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Alcoa High School junior drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3.6 seconds remaining, and the Lady Tornadoes made it stand up for a 47-45 win over rival Maryville at Alcoa. With the win, Alcoa (17-11) has now collected victories over Heritage, William Blount and the Lady Rebels in the same season for the first time in many years.
“If we cab take that momentum and put it into our district, we’ll come out on top,” Moore said.

In fact, offense really wasn’t the story at all.
The Tornadoes’ 73-55 rout of the Rebels in the first of two meetings between the heated rivals this season was done with defense. No zones. No traps. Just sticky, old-fashioned, man-on-man.
“We really didn’t concentrate on any specific player,” Alcoa coach Micah Marsh said.

Basketball is a postseason sport, and, come that point next month, the Rebels could be a very scary team.
A 87-57 defeat of Heritage last week lifted Maryville to a 7-7 mark on the year. There’s little comparison to the school’s 2007 state championship in terms of overall record at this point, but there are striking similarities in other respects.
The Rebels that shocked the state in defeating three ranked teams at that year’s state tournament had a lightening-quick, playmaking guard who could score in senior Jordan Damron. Sophomore T.J. Kimble currently fills that role, the All-Blount County guard averaging 11.1 points and 4.5 assists per game on blistering drives to the basket.

When a win over William Blount followed a week later, you knew it wasn’t a fluke.
As the high school basketball season hits the holiday tournament circuit, few teams are hotter locally than coach Tonya Gay’s Lady Tornadoes. At 7-2, Class AA Alcoa is off to one of its best starts in some time, with victories over two additional AAA schools - South-Doyle and Bearden - to go with the Lady Mountaineer and Lady Governor wins.

For much of the opening half, Gatlinburg-Pittman had put on a clinic. The Highlanders opened the Region 2AA quarterfinal last Saturday at Alcoa on a 9-0 run. The lead ballooned to 15 before Alcoa could trim it to 11 at the half.
Slowly, basket by basket, the Tornadoes closed the gap.
“They kept hitting big shots, but our guys never backed down,” Alcoa coach Micah Marsh said. “I told our guys, ‘It’s a possession game, one possession at a time.’”

What we didn’t know until Monday was just how tough the Maryville High School junior has become.
Sophomore Miranda Maples erupted for a game-high 29 points, and the No. 7-ranked Lady Rebels fought off a determined William Blount team, 61-50, in a Region 2AAA semifinal Monday night at James Campbell Gymnasium.

Intent on stopping Torie Vaught from going wild inside, a Maryville opponent opens the game in a zone. Guards Alex Breazeale, Rebekah Singleton and Carrie Goodson shoot the opposition out of said zone.
Vaught takes off, her quick feet and feathered jump shots in the lane powering Maryville to victory.

To make sure Maryville really felt it, the Lady Lions made it a clean sweep three weeks ago in Demorest, Ga., Piedmont taking both halves of a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader in an unprecedented show of force.
Saturday, the Lions will attempt the once unthinkable when they visit Maryville’s Boydson Baird Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both teams.
