As our Airbus A139 made its descent, we entered a series of valleys, banking steeply this way and that, hemmed in increasingly tightly by mountains on either side, until, at an elevation of no more than a couple of hundred feet, the aircraft turned hard to the left, rounded a spur and quickly leveled out.

Before this moment, I had barely traveled more than five hours outside of my hometown of Cartersville, Ga. Now I was five hours from waking up and embarking on a trip out of the United States for the first time. I was headed to the People’s Republic of China. I lay in my bed, emotions overwhelming my body and voices filling my head. What if no one is at the airport to greet me? What if I cannot understand the Chinese symbols? What if my host cannot understand my Southern accent? I was beginning to second-guess my decision to study abroad in China.

From 9 a.m. until 12 p.m., the Maryville Farmers’ Market bustles with shoppers, vendors and the sounds of banjos from musicians playing Americana tunes. It was 10 in the morning and already hot -- the kind of miserable, sticky hot that sends cumulus clouds to pile up like a cotton candy traffic jam, the kind of hot that wilts flowers and people, the kind of hot that sends perfectly reasonable people into philosophical tangents.

That was the message Dr. Tom Bogart delivered when members of the college faculty, staff, board of directors, students and the community gathered to inaugurated him as Maryville College’s 11th president Saturday morning, April 16, during a ceremony at the Clayton Center for the Arts.

A group of volunteers and staff preparing a special exhibit to honor past presidents have found Isaac Anderson’s inaugural address.
“It is 14 pages of difficult reading,” added Gail Hafner, “but I did enjoy the history of it.”.
“It’s a 200-year-old, 14-page sermon,” said Rob Kennedy.

The foothills of Maryville will reverberate next weekend with the sounds of the bagpipe, beckoning students, friends, alumni, dignitaries, community folks, faculty and staff to college for a very special event: The inauguration of Dr. William T. “Tom” Bogart.

A broad smile on his face, arms raised in celebration, the Maryville College president led three of his students into Neyland Stadium last Sunday morning as the anchor leg of their Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon team.
The self-dubbed “Overly Aggressive Scots” of senior Miranda Coffey, juniors Zach Pickett and C.J. Burtner and
Bogart finished in a time of 4 hours, 5 minutes, 42.5 seconds for the 26.2-mile course, just missing their target time of four hours. Bogart ran the final 6.1 miles, with the remainder of the quartet meeting him at the entrance to the stadium for the dash to the 50-yard line.

</title><link>http://www.blounttoday.com/news/2011/apr/07/panel-discussion-focuses-faiths-role-maryville-col/?partner=RSS</link><description>Maryville College’s connection to the Presbyterian Church began with its founding in 1819 by the Rev. Isaac Anderson, a Presbyterian minister of Ulster-Scot heritage. From the beginning, the church-related liberal arts college has emphasized the practice of faith and learning, which connects scholarship, worship and community.
In an effort to continue the conversation about what a church-related liberal arts education means, a panel discussion, “Faith’s Role in Learning and the Maryville College Experience,” has been planned for Thursday, April 14, from 1:30 until 3 p.m. in the Clayton Center for the Arts’ Harold and Jean Lambert Recital Hall.
