They love to open doors for me. The problem is, they fight about who gets to do it so I often have to walk around a fist fight to get through the door.

Church, Kroger on Senior Citizen Discount Days and Mom’s Group gatherings have been, in my experience, the most fertile grounds for these kinds of inquisitions.

A few years ago, the reality show mom transformed from a frumpy new mom of newborns and toddlers into a slim, spray-tanned mom in miniskirts with elementary-age children. The popularity of her TV show and tabloid antics have faded but her metamorphosis is representative of many post-toddler moms.

Along with being a new editor, a mom, a housekeeper (who needs to be fired) and a really lousy member of the school library committee, I’m also shepherding 14 5-and 6-year-old children with bats.
Last year, the Team Mom made it look so simple. She passed out jerseys on time; she lined the kids up for the team picture and distributed all the handouts we needed without breaking a sweat. So, when I registered my son for his second year of baseball in January, I was more than happy to help.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Bible girl. However, some of the man-made practices need revision, in my not-so-humble opinion.
Lent is one of those traditions in need of change, and it began Wednesday. For those not familiar, Lent is the six weeks leading up to Easter. It is a time where some Christians make sacrifices, most commonly things like refraining from caffeine, sweets and other indulgences.

I don’t support Valentine’s traditions. A grown woman should not receive a teddy bear. It’s just weird. On the flip side, this observance alienates single people. Actually, Saint Valentine was a priest, so he was either celibate or a really crappy boyfriend.

I’m not healthy or in shape; I’m just not as fat.
How did I do it? I broke up with food. I’m not in love anymore. We’re just friends now.
I didn’t consciously make this decision. There wasn’t a revelation, a self-help book or an Oprah lecture that caused this to happen. I just got busy with other interests that didn’t involve baking, trying new restaurants or loading up on clearance groceries.

In what I describe as the world’s weirdest baby shower, “Magi from the East” brought three symbolic gifts to Jesus: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

For Oprah fans, being part of the studio audience in Chicago is equivalent to visiting Mecca, except this holy land only allows a very small fraction of devotees to visit.
Even though reservations to the live show are nearly impossible to get, my best friend and I scored two seats in May for the final taping of Oprah’s nineteenth season.

In my 20s, I had all the answers. Now I have only questions. Most often I ask, “Is this normal?”
It is a relief when I find moms who can relate to the chaos in my house. On the other hand, I’ve run into a few mothers who just give unsolicited advice. Those gals don’t get a second play date.
The following confessions will either inflate your ego, or it will comfort you. If it does the latter, consider us friends.
I don’t always limit my kids’ TV time. I put them in Time Out and forget they are there. I struggle to have sincere compassion unless there is blood.
